Galileo Frosh/Soph Football 2004

-Galileo ends it's season on a sour note, losing to Balboa, 26-12. The young lions were playing without two starters; rb/cb-Brandon Fong and fb/mlb-Maurice Maxwell. With Marshall High School forfeiting their game to Galileo, the Lions finished with a 3-3 record, 3-6 overall. The .500 standing is much improved from last year's 1-4 season.

-Galileo's Frosh/Soph Football Team, after watching their varsity team win their first game against undefeated Lowell, 13-8, faced the same challenge at Lowell, to win the first game of the season against a team who came into the game with a 3-0 record in league play. An unusually sunny day at Lowell felt more like a dark rainy day as Lowell opened up with a 55-yard kick off return. Scoring easily on that drive, the Cardinal offense faltered on the 2-point conversion. Galileo running back, Brandon Fong, answered Lowell's impressive drive when he scored on a 16-yard scamper. With the score tied, Lowell would regain the lead and extend it to a heartbreaking 18-6 score at the half: on 4th and 9, the Cardinal's launched a 34-yard touchdown pass over the outstretched hands of Fong who was covering on the play and busted through Galileo's gut for a 40-yard touchdown run in the next series. The good news? Galileo's defense stopped the Cardinals three times on the point-after-touchdown plays, keeping the hosts at 18 instead of 24.

Galileo's defense shut down the Cardinals in the second half and it's offense took to the air as split-end, Deshawn Jose burned his coverage for a 42-yard touchdown reception from quarterback, Danny Huang. Electing to go for 2, Huang's pass would slip through the hands of Jose on a full back pass but wide receiver, Willie Thomas pulled down the deflection for a crucial extra 2 points.

Down 18-14 with less than 8 minutes remaining, Galileo's defense allowed Lowell to march down to the 40 yard line and on 2nd and 2, the Lions made two consecutive key stops. With the ball back and 3 and half minutes to spare, Huang threw another bomb to Jose for Galileo's longest touchdown pass of the season, a 60 yard play that put them ahead 20-18 for good. Galileo's center, Jonathan Funegra made a key shoe-string tackle with 8 seconds to play in the game. Without any timeouts remaining, the Cardinals were left standing on Galileo's 8-yard line, helplessly watching the clock run down.

Huang threw one interception but made up for it with his two touchdown passes in the second half. Huang also completed another long pass to tight end, London Scott, for 25 yards to help give Galileo it's second score. Fong fumbled the ball twice but Lowell only recovered one. Fong then made his longest run of the season, a 46-yard oxygen-killer that put the lions in good field position during the second score.

-The young lions continue to show improvement as they fell 2-points short of pushing Washington into overtime. Sophomore tailback, Rashaad Headspeth had his best game of the season, going past 100 yards and finding the endzone twice. Fellow backs, sophomores, Brandon Fong and Deshawn Jose scored on a pass and a run respectively.

Galileo's defense held the eagles scoreless until the last few seconds of the first half. The 5 yard touchdown run was aided by a flag on Fong who was called for interference on a pass. The second half was a see-saw battle but 2 big runs by Washington gave them the lead for good after Galileo answered with Headspeth's second touchdown on a screen pass that lead to a 20-14 lead. Without middle linebacker, Jose who was sidelined by leg cramps, the young Galileo defense fell asleep.

-The 2004 season is underway as Galileo's Frosh/Soph squad prepare to face Mission of San Jose in a scrimmage. Under Coach Mark Huynh's first year of coaching, along with a big freshmen turnout, this team is headed for a quick crash course.
