Lady Lions Improve Steadily
Young and talented, this year's team secured a #2 seed in the playoffs
early to draw a home game against Lincoln. In their third meeting, the
Lady Lions took the Lady Mustangs down to the wire but fell flat in the
last minute, unable to close the 4-point gap.
Much can be made about the vast improvement of the girl's team just
by comparing the three games against Lincoln. In the first meeting, Lincoln
spanked Galileo at the Lick Wilmerding Tournament championship game by
26. The second meeting took place in the regular season at Lincoln. Galileo
kept it close until the Lady Mustangs turned it on in the fourth quarter
to secure a 15-point victory. Then came the playoff game at home, a 4-point
loss.
With point guard, Uzoma Uwakah and Ronnette Raynor returning for their
senior season and the continual growth of sophomore, Danielle Fong and
freshman, Wynne Chau, Galileo will be good for years to come. Lady Lions Win Homecoming against Wallenberg
By Andrew Ho
Calling themselves the “Triple Threat,” the scoring trio of #21 Ronnette
Raynor, #14 Uzoma Uwakah, and #23 Danielle Fong, led the Lady Lions in scoring
with double digits. They also led the team to their first league
win at home against Wallenberg. Coming off a 6 and 3 preseason, they won
their
first away game at ISA.
Galileo started the game by holding a lead as high as ten points, but Wallenberg
slowly rallied back, knocking down repeated three pointers, eventually tying
the score. The Lady Lions stepped up, attacking the basket and making defensive
stops along the way. However, it wasn’t until the last two minutes when
it came down to two free throws that put the Lady Bulldogs away. Raynor knocked
down
two straight free throws that put the Lions ahead with a nice cushion.
The Lady Lions have made surprising new additions with two freshmen, Wynne
Chau
and Kimberly Ricci. Chau, #22, started
for the team on Tuesday, but her home debut was cut short, getting into foul
trouble early. However, she displayed great physical talent, proving to be a
good
defensive player by forcing three turnovers.
“We have a great team with a lot of potential; we will make the playoffs
if we continue like this,” says Uzoma Uwakah. The Lady Lions’ 2005
season should prove to be a fun and exciting. With the changes made to the squad,
the team will, without a doubt, make yet another playoff appearance.
