2005 Season Wrap UP
With two returning players from last year's playoff team, Galile finished
with a 5-5 league record by winning a thriller at Balboa, their final
game of the season. With a sizeable lead, the young lions allowed the
Bucs to claw their way back with the deep ball. BJ Green knocked down
4 three
pointers in the second half for a game-high 21 points to help erase a
double digit lead to 1. However, Galileo could not be denied as freshman,
Jackie Phung made a
crucial
jumper and drained 2 free throws to give the lions a 3-point lead. Balboa
had a chance to tie with 1 second left but the long pass down court was
deflected by Brandon Fong. Fong scored a team-high 13 points to go along
with his 7 boards, 5 assists, and 2 steals. Off-guard, Danny Huang, despite
an 0-6 effort at the free throw line, followed
with 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. Freshman, Kenneth Ugo grabbed
a team-high 8 rebounds and added 8 points.

Win helps Lions Move ahead
By Joseph Gebreyesus
On Tuesday Jan. 11, 2005, Galileo’s Boys Frosh/Soph Basketball
team faced off against the Boilermakers of O’Connell for there
second league game of the season. The visiting Lions took an early lead
at the end of the first period, 11-6. But the Lions starting five, after
a string of missed shots, were replaced. “They weren’t doing
too well, so I took some of them out of the game,” said Coach Huynh
in his 7th season as Galileo’s coach. But this didn’t add
much to the Lion’s lead, scoring only two in the second period,
ending the first half with a 13 to 8 cushion.
In the second half, the Lions woke up in the third period by doubling
their first
half offensive output. But there offense wasn’t the only help the Lions
had. The Lions defense had a shutout in the third quarter until they scored on
a layup with less than a minute left on the clock. Up 26 to 10 in the forth,
Coach Huynh took out the starters and put in the bench players “because
he wanted to give everyone a chance to play”.
Galileo improved to 2-0 in the AAA with a 31 to 23 victory. At the end of the
game, leading scorer Brandon Fong said, “The reason for the win was because
we worked together and worked on new plays that helped us put up points in the
third quarter.” Coach Huynh felt that it was because they “...denied
the point-guard the ball, and had good defense in the third.” But he also
stated “Shooting was off and we weren’t taking the right shots, and
we also need to improve on our outside shooting and cut down on our turnovers.”
